Gameplay mods or stat/ability changing mods that the mod creators explicitly state never to use online have the highest risk of getting you banned and should only be used in offline game modes. The chances of anticheat picking up cosmetic, UI, sound and FX mods while playing online are extremely low but nevertheless they are there. There is a non-zero risk associated with using mods in mutliplayer matches. If multiple mods modify the same file, the mod lower in the order will be the one whose changes will be in effect. The mods will be applied in the order specified in the right panel.Apply the mods you want in the right panel.
Download the mods you want from NexusMods and import them into FMM. Start FMM and give the path to the BF2 exe file. Download and install Frosty Mod Manager (FMM) and give it permissions to Run as Administrator every time. If you're new to modding BF2, in a nutshell the steps for installing and using mods are as follows: Cosmetic mods that add brand new heroes on top of existing heroes complete with voicelines. Cosmetic mods that add your most desired character skins for existing heroes, troopers and reinforcements. 
Gameplay mods that add or enhance the offline Instant Action modes. However you can spice things up a lot by trying out some mods from the excellent modding scene this game has developed over 3 years!
